Deep Ellum Blues Alley

July 2, 2021 | Deep Ellum Team

The culmination of several years of thought, collaboration and planning, Deep Ellum’s Blues Alley kicked off this Spring!  This immersive mural experience highlights the history & influence of Deep Ellum’s musicians through the lens of today’s talented local artists. The brainchild of local artist and curation team, Dan and Cathryn Colcer, Blues Alley is a truly collaborative effort between local artists, property owners, and community members including the Deep Ellum Foundation’s Cultural Committee.

A range of incredible artists were selected to contribute to Phase 1 of Deep Ellum’s Blues Alley. Some have muraled for decades in Deep Ellum, while for others, Blues Alley represents one of their first full-scale mural experiences. The selected Blues Alley Artists are:

Jody Aderhold

Dan Colcer

Cathryn Colcer

IZK Davies

Alec DeJesus

Hatziel Flores

Ebony Lewis

Alfredo Pina

Rya Stalsby

Teal Suns

Did you know Deep Ellum was officially recognized as a state-designated Cultural District in 2020? The Deep Ellum Cultural District is now eligible for Texas Commission on the Arts grant opportunities to advance and promote local arts. To continue developing Deep Ellum’s Blues Alley and kickoff Phase 2 which will stretch across Clover Street between Crowdus Street and Malcolm X Blvd, The Deep Ellum Foundation submitted a grant request that, if awarded, will support more local artists, dynamic lighting and other enhancements contributing to the project.

Phase 1 of Blues Alley can be visited behind The Stack at 2700 Commerce and has featured artists at work throughout June, Black Music Appreciation Month. Thank you to Dan & Cathryn Colcer for their curation and dedicated leadership of this project and to The Stack Deep Ellum for making this great start to our multi-year effort possible!
